The Arrival of the Lil' Dude!

I will write more when I have the time, but I felt it important to at least make the brief announcement that my son has arrived!  He was born at 3:57pm on 12-6-12 and weighed 7 lbs 1 oz.  What an spiritual experience it was!  I could not be happier.  I am so proud of Pooh.  She was simply amazing and continues to be.  I am truly the most blessed man!  Here are just a few pics to prove it.
This was taken right after he was born.  What an amazing thing to witness.  There is indeed a God.
Just chillin' waiting for his first bath.
 His first bath.
All cleaned up and ready to be shown off
Before being taken back to Momma.
 Finally a complete family.
The Lou loves her little brother.
 Proud Papa
I could stare at him forever.
Seriously, not only did this woman do a fantastic job delivering the little dude, she looked beautiful the entire time doing it!
He spent most of his time in NICU and was kept a couple days past.
 His hands are so active.
 BIG Sister, Little Brother.
All bundled and ready to go!
 Still on O2 at home.
Poor Leah spent her minimal time around her little Brother the first week because she was sick.
 Clearly these aren't in order.
 Isn't she lovely?
 So happy.  So happy.
 At Last.
 What a cute kid!
And look at all that hair!
 Chill
 I object!
 Ten Fingers Ten Toes!
 Tiger!
More to come.  Whether you want it or not!

To Arm or Not To Arm...That is the Question.

I should be posting about the birth of my new son, #2.  Instead, I find my thoughts lingering toward those Fathers in Connecticut who recently lost their sons and daughters to the mindless act of one evil and deranged person.  I cannot begin to consider, nor do I want to, how they must feel at this time.  Simply devastating.  Just awful.  While the thoughts and prayers of all of us should be directed compassionately toward those families and their loss, much of the nation involves itself in a passionate debate over gun control.  For every time there is a season and first, I believe we must mourn the deaths of these precious children and those adults who chose to protect them.

But much of that has been cast aside as the media sweeps the season along to the next and greater money maker of discussion, that of gun control.  I have seen this spark ignite to a great firestorm and it will grow greater in scope in the coming months.  Much like any political discussion these days, there seems to be no choice but black or white.  Every political issue seems to offer up only two options these days, much like the timeless Ford v. Chevy debate.  "You must choose!  You must either love Chevrolet and hate Ford or you must hate Chevrolet and love Ford."  There is no other option.  Chevy lovers would rather you hate Chevy and love Ford entirely than to be a fan of both and vice-versa.  Well, guess what?  I love classic Chevys and classic Fords!  There.  I said it.  Are you sitting down?  I also like The Trojans of THE University of Southern California as well as the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.  "WHAT?!"  "SACRELIG!"

In this issue, I admit it is disturbing to see the media and others immediately gobble up this awful situation in Connecticut to push their own agenda for an increase in gun control.  But I also realize there are those who believe there should be gun control and bear those beliefs out of genuine and growing concern of others. In other words, not every anti-gun person is a red commie.  Some just believe differently than others.  Sadly the reaction to the media's seize upon this opportunity has forced those who strongly support the right to bear arms to take a stronger stance regarding no need for stricter gun control.  Guess what people...Much like the raging Chevy and Ford debate, there can be a middle ground.

2nd Amendment supporters, of which I count myself, tend to think for some reason that "gun control" means "we will take your guns from you".  This doesn't have to be the case.  Now there is definitely a concern with the current administration and trends of the country that cause 2nd Amendment supporters to stand on the ready regarding the issue, but this does not need to negate the need for tighter gun control...not restriction per se, but control.  Now again, most of my 2nd Amendment supporters are going to be up in arms about this because they will automatically associate "gun control" with "gun seizure".  I assure you, they can have my gun when they pry it from my dead cold fingers.

To those fanatics calling for an abolition of gun ownership, your argument (Mr. Bob Costas) that Kasandra Perkins would still be alive today if Jovan Belcher did not have a gun is very short sided and not valid.  That statement is Swiss Cheese at best.  According to that logic, Cain would not have killed Able if he didn't own a club.  Yet the club was never the victim of fear mongering or threat of being banned.  Is it tragic?  Of course it is.  But we need to spend more time looking at everything else.  There are indeed other issues involved in every one of the slayings this year.  Surely you are not so ignorant to believe the only issue is gun control.

With that said, hopefully we can be willing to compromise and put aside agendas in an effort to make the world a better place.  Somehow I doubt it.  It seems we crossed an imaginary line where there are only two options to any given issue.  Perhaps from now on, there are only two ways to skin a cat.  Until that is all too painfully made aware, I will continue to carry weapons, but I will also continue to see a need where firearms are perhaps a little more difficult to own, thus hopefully discouraging those who seek to do harm or at least slow them down.  Where is the harm in that?  Inconvenient?  Perhaps.  It seems a gun is not typically one of those things you JUST HAVE TO HAVE THIS MOMENT!  It isn't like you saw an Arby's commercial and immediately have a craving for a jamocha shake that cannot wait to be satisfied.

Owning and carrying a firearm is something that should be well thought out and planned!  It seems to me that someone who has to have a gun RIGHT NOW, may be the person that shouldn't be given a gun.  Again, there are those who will choose to ignore the word, "may", in that last sentence and read it as an absolute rather than a variable.  I assure you, I am nothing if I am not at least an impulse buyer!  In fact, I was in the market for a gun just three weeks ago.  This is when it became apparent to me that getting a gun is all too easy.  I just went to KSL.com (a local news station site that has a classifieds section) and immediately found a list of 1500 handguns for sale, most of which never offered or required to register the gun.  In fact, most were interested in my money.  Only one was curious as to why I wanted a gun and what my intentions were.  It is too easy.  Nobody can deny that.

In fact, here in Utah, it seems EVERYONE not only owns firearms, but carries a firearm.  They hand out conceal and carry permits at Chuck E. Cheese when you collect 50 tickets from Skee Ball!  This is both good and bad.  Good because there is a lower crime rate in Utah and some of that may be attributed to the many gun owners.  Bad, because anyone can get a gun and permit to carry it.  Anyone!  The education and preparation is minimal at best and any idiot can check those two boxes off a list.  We even had an idiot carry a loaded weapon into the workplace recently.  He apparently didn't know how to empty all ammunition from the gun before handing it to a coworker then encouraging the coworker to "squeeze the trigger"!  POP!  Idiot!  Nonetheless, he continues to carry multiple guns with no repercussions for his idiocy.  But I digress...

So to recap, I support the 2nd Amendment and also support the right to have my own opinion...even if it doesn't fall within your crazy scheme to only offer me two opinions to choose from.  I believe we need stricter gun laws and I believe we are truly missing the boat when it comes to discussing the other issues at hand; mental health, detecting a disturbance, addressing that disturbance and preventing tragedy.  Unfortunately, tragedy will happen.  If not with guns, than with sticks and stones as Cain did with Able.  We need to find a way to love and to respect each other and value life and identify and help those who don't.  The media distracts us with the debate of gun prohibition and too many of us get sucked in so quick with views even stronger than they were before the debate began.  Like all things politically, we are a mess.  When we quit talking and listening and respecting, progress is halted.

With that said, you can pry my gun from my dead cold fingers.

Morning Conversation

The following conversation took place in The Lou's bed this morning as she searched for her Rapunzel doll:

The Lou:  "Daddy, where is my Rapunzel?"
Daddy:  *holding her Rapunzel doll under his arm the whole time* "I don't know."
The Lou:  *noticing I have Rapunzel*  "You have it, Silly Daddy!"
Daddy: "No, this is my doll."
The Lou:  "Daddy, you're silly!  That's not a USC doll!  That's a girl's doll!"

This conversation left me with the nagging question; Is there such a thing as an SC doll and where can I get one?!

Christmas Conversations ~ Hot Cocoa

The following conversation took place the night before Christmas Decorating:

Daddy:  "Lou, guess what?!"
The Lou:  "What?!"
Daddy:  "Tomorrow we are going to put up and decorate the Christmas Tree!"
The Lou:  *CHEERS LOUDLY*  "Daddy, that means we get to have Hot Cocoa!"
Daddy:  "Oh yeah?!"
The Lou:  "Yeah!  Christmas means Hot Cocoa!"
Daddy: "Sweet!"

The subsequent conversation took place the following night as we were to decorate:

Daddy:  "Okay, let's decorate the tree."
The Lou:  *holding her arms out in a stopping motion*  "Wait!  We have to have Hot Cocoa!"
The Lou:  *does a little song and dance dedicated to the Hot Cocoa gods*
Daddy:  "You really like Hot Cocoa, don't you?"
The Lou:  *looking and speaking to me as if I am crazy*  "YES!  Have you ever had it?!  It tastes just like chocolate!"
Daddy:  "Well, alright!  Mommy is making some now."
The Lou:  *sipping her Hot Cocoa*  "Daddy, do you like it?"
Daddy:  "Yes.  It is delicious."
The Lou:  "I TOLD YOU!  It tastes just like chocolate!"
The Lou:  "My favorite part is the smishsmellows!"

This is one of those conversations that words cannot describe.  Even if dictated exactly as the conversation took place, you could never capture the excitement and personality of it.  It was a profound lesson to me, and not a solitary lesson but rather one of many conversations that teach me to be grateful for all I have; To appreciate the simple things with such excitement and passion.  If we express such love and gratitude for the simple things we already have, how much happier I suppose we will be during the holidays and throughout life.

From the mouth of babes...from the mouth of babes.

Christmas Conversations ~ Elfreth

First and foremost...MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!  Our family has adopted "The Elf on the Shelf" tradition.  For those who don't know what it is, it is a book that explains how it is the Santa comes to know if the kids are good or naughty.  He has helper elves such as the elf you see above.  The book explains that each family is assigned a helper elf who likes to hide around the house and observe and then, at night, he or she travels back to the North Pole to inform Santa of the children's behavior.  The elf then finds a new hiding place.

Nothing like a Christmas tradition to teach your kids lessons such as 1) how to tattle, 2) how to always watch over your shoulder in paranoia and 3) how to behave only when being watched!  HAHA!  The fun part is that you get to name your elf and register it on Santa's website.  Santa then sends an email to your child by name and every morning the child wakes up to eagerly discover where that nuisance of an elf is hiding today!

In an effort to strike up the season, I helped The Lou look for Elfreth (that's our elf on a shelf) the first time and reminded her of the reason why Elfreth is in our home.  The following conversation took place:

Daddy:  "Lou, Where is Elfreth?"
The Lou:  *looks around until she spots him*  "Right there!"
Daddy:  "Remember, Elfreth is here to watch you and to report to Santa how you are behaving."
The Lou:  "How does he do that?"  *looking perplexed*
Daddy:  "Every night Elfreth travels back to the North Pole to tell Santa."
The Lou:  *speaking matter of factly and as if I am being silly*  "Uh...Daddy...It's just a toy."

She is already getting older!  Her reasoning and logic skills are definitely in tact and in motion.  It made me sad to realize, but also proud that she is bright.  I expressed those exact sentiments to her that night and the next morning, as if to appease me, the first thing she asked was,

The Lou:  "Daddy, where is Elfreth hiding today?!  Let's find him!"

All is right in the world again.

Conversations on the Foot of a Bed

Upon The Lou waking up with a stuffy nose, the following conversation took place on the foot of my bed.

The Lou:  Sniff, Sniff.
The Lou:  Sniff, Sniff.
Daddy:  "How are you?"
The Lou:  "I have a stuffy nose."
Daddy:  "You know what will help that?"
The Lou:  "What?"
Daddy:  "A Great Big Hug!"
The Lou and Daddy share a big hug
The Lou:  Sniff, Sniff
The Lou:  "Daddy?"
Daddy:  "Yes?"
The Lou:  "Maybe a cookie will help my stuffy nose."

HAHA!  She is getting smarter every day!

Another Conversation on the Swing

This conversation took place while pushing my daughter, The Lou, on her swing.  Upon assuming she heard me fart, the following short, yet condemning conversation took place.  Of course, it must be noted for the record, that I never fart.  That would be rude.

Daddy:  (makes some random sound somehow that resembles a fart)
Leah:  "Daddy, did you fart?!"
Daddy:  "Of course not!"
Leah:  "Daddy, Jesus knows if you farted.  He can hear you."
Daddy:  (head simultaneously hangs in shame while proudly looks up at his daughter swinging in the sky)

Conversations on the Porch

Last Night, The Lou and I walked out onto the front porch to enjoy the beautiful sunset.  The following conversation took place:

Daddy:  "Look at the beautiful sunset."
The Lou:  "It is SO beautiful!"
The Lou:  "Daddy, did you know that God lives in the sky at night?"
Daddy:  "Really?"
The Lou:  "Yes, and I love him."
The Lou:  "I also miss Jesus."

From the mouth of babes.  From the mouth of babes.

Conversations in a Jeep

This morning, The Lou and I went for a drive in the Jeep.  She is obsessed with Halloween!  This is one snippet of our conversation.  It made my heart swell.

Daddy:  "Are you excited for Halloween, Babycakes?"
The Lou:  "Yes!  I love Halloween!"
Daddy:  "What are you going to be for Halloween?"
The Lou:  "A Bad Fairy!"
The Lou:  "What are you going to be, Daddy?"
Daddy:  "Check this out!  You are going to love it!"
Daddy:  "For Halloween, I am going to go as 'The World's Greatest Daddy'!"
The Lou:  (Confused) "Daddy, you are already that!"

Like I said, my heart swelled.

Happy Birthday Girl!

Pooh and I have been blessed with the greatest little girl in the world!  We waited so long for her and the many painful years brought an end result that was worth every spilled tear, and there were plenty.  We joke that Heavenly Father (along with his angel) blessed us for our patience and perseverance by giving us the most perfect little girl he has ever made.  Granted, she has her moments, but the last four years have been wonderful and she truly is a dream.  It is hard to believe it has been four years.  I love you, Lou!

I posted a trillion pictures on Facebook, but I narrowed it down to a few of my favorites here.

What's In A Name?

Having spent a fair share of my life in sales on the phone, I have spoken to many with odd names and seen even more odd names in print.  For a guy with a questionable memory, it appears to be a fairly easy task for me to remember years later, the name "Anita Chalupa" or "Richard Wahd" (Dick Wad), or "Bumsuck" or "Fuk" or "Shithead" (pronounced shi-thaid), or La-A (pronounced Ladasha).  Someone once said, "Ooyala's a horrible name!  Can you imagine a sales person trying to say it?!"  I concur...and chuckle.  Shithead...hahaha...her parents must have hated her!

If you have ever named a child you know what a difficult responsibility it can be.  Every name that makes the first cut is run through a rigorous check list:
  • Can you make a vulgar name of it?
  • Can you rhyme with it in a way that would be bothersome?
  • Does it conjure up thoughts or memories of your ex or your spouses ex?
  • Does it happen to remind you of someone you do not care for or dislike intensely?
  • Do you have any close relatives or family members that use the same name?
  • Does the name seem to seal his or her fate?
  • Is it too unique, old fashioned or difficult to pronounce?
  • Etc.
We thought we had it down pat...easy, squeezy, lemon peazy!  By the way, what does that mean?!  What is a peazy?!  Anyway, years before we had children, we had a boy's name and a girl's name picked out.  The Lou's name was going to be Caleb McGavin, but upon her arrival and lacking some bits and pieces, we had to switch it to the girl's name we had already settled on and then added her birth mother's name as well.  We liked the uniqueness of giving her two middle names and it really is a beautiful name.

Now that we have a little boy on his way, each day reminds me that we have no name picked yet and the clock is ticking!  Names to me should be unique and reflect on a meaning or someone or someplace.  For instance, "his name isn't just John, he was named after a hero of mine or perhaps St. John's Bay our favorite vacation spot."  So, pen in hand, I sat for hours and made a list of names that sounded (to me) cool and either had a wonderful meaning or some other significance.  This is when the additional check list was thrust upon me...one name at a time:
  • No Bible Names - It's not that Pooh doesn't like the Bible, she doesn't want a theme
  • No Alliteration - That rules out at least any name starting with "T".
  • No Names Starting With "L" - Heaven forbid we have two kids with "L" names...again with the anti-theme sentiment.
  • No Names That End In "er" or "or"
  • No Family Member, At All, May Have The Name - This is not just those family members you see often or directly related, but this also means no extended family or extended-extended family, but also is to include any step family or even extended step family!
  • Nobody We Know Can Have The Name - I have not nailed her down to a specific geographic radius just yet.
  • No Name That She Deems "Weird" - Still seeking a definition on that rule.
I tease Pooh about this, but it really is getting difficult and I recognize it is a very tough decision.  Is there really that much on the line?  Many believe there is.  It's been said, "Words have meaning and names have power".  Some also believe, myself included sadly, that a name has a sense of fate to it and become an issue much like the chicken and the egg?  Which came first?  The success or the successful name?  The nerdiness or the nerdy sounding name?

To this day, I am still not fond of my first name.  I have association of pride along with it as I am a Jr. and I love and admire my Father.  However, take him out of it and I simply don't like it.  My middle name is quite unique and has a family meaning as it is my Father's middle name too and also my Father's Father's first name.  However, when shortened, it was not unique enough for me.  So, at the age of 13 or 14, I changed the spelling and have been known by everyone by that spelling since...except my Dad who spells it the original way and my Aunt Kathy who has always misspelled it.

I do tend to think, and mostly hope, that we will be judged by our peers more by our actions than by our names.  To quote from Romeo and Juliet, "What's in a name?  That which we call a rose by any other name would be as sweet".  Hopefully, whatever name we choose, it will be a strong name; meaning that he will be named with confidence.  That he will know from whence he came and thus conduct his life with conviction and pride in the fact that he shares the same last name as his parents and will adopt those values and principles instilled in him.  Then, his name will become his label and that label will be revered by all regardless of his name.

Those who have known me most of my life know I collect quotes.  Here are a couple I like regarding names:
  • "I'm going to name my son BOB and pronounce it John" - Eran Bair
  • "Nicknames stick to people and the more ridiculous are the most adhesive." - Thomas Haliburton
  • "I'd be stupid not to take into consideration that there are certain things people will not consider me for because my name is Lopez." - Jennifer Lopez
  • "Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell the name will carry." - Bill Cosby
Pooh has come up with one name.  I have a list of around 90.  Most names were influenced by family, religion, surfing, football, travel and more.  Last week I shared with someone the extensive list of names that I came up with and about half  way through, the person interrupted me and accused me of joking, stating, "Is this a serious list?"  The end judgment was that I am unqualified to pick the name.  So, with that, I ask for your help.  Please comment and leave any suggestions you may have on boy's names.  Pooh and I will carefully consider each submission.

In closing:  Here are some of the more "non-serious" names I came up with; not in any particular order.  Some, I really like!  Are they really that weird?!
  • Xander, Tristan, SinJin, Laird, Sunny, Taj, Dax, Donavon, August, Maz, Nat, Trigg, Velzy, Brody, Layne, Kit, Bohdi, Tag, Chino, Aiden, Troy, Zion, Israel, Kelani, Kaipo, Champion, Sawyer, Ambrose, Armstrong, Tay, Junior, Leonidas, Americus, Baldwin and Getty.
We anxiously await your suggestions.  If we pick the name you suggest, there may be a free year's subscription to The Most Blessed Man's blog!!!  WHOA!

The Continuation of, "Conversations On A Swing"

Tonight, I was working on the lawn around the swingset while The Lou did a fantastic job of kicking and pumping herself!  While she kicked and pumped and I edged and weeded, we talked.  It went something like this:

Daddy:  "Baby, you are doing great!  You can pump and kick yourself on the swing"
The Lou:  "I know, Daddy!  I am fast!"
Daddy:  "You are SO fast!"
The Lou:  "God made me so fast!"
Daddy:  "He did, didn't he?!"
The Lou:  (While looking up towards heaven) "Thank you, God."
The Lou:  "I told God 'Thank You' so that he will make me even faster."
Daddy:  "That is right, babe.  When we express thanks, he enjoys blessing us"
The Lou:  "Like in prayers!"
Daddy:  "Yes, exactly."

Isn't she a peach?!

Second Spring

I love living where I live.  Being one that finds peace in the beauty of nature, I am blessed to live close to it.  So close in fact, within fifteen minutes I can be in complete solitude with the exception of the loving arms of God's care wrapped firmly around me in the form of mountains, streams, trees and clouds.  They say that Fall is the 2nd Spring, when every leaf turns into a flower.  The hills and mountains of Utah are truly a resemblance of this quote.  I took the opportunity on my staycation to spend a few minutes at The Buck N' Beaver Lodge in TimberLakes and to take a drive up the American Fork Canyon and to Cascade Springs behind my home.  While I was about 5 days late, it was still beautiful.  As is usually the case, I spent much time in grateful prayer and consideration for the love my Father in Heaven has for me.  His love is apparent everywhere we find good, but I always feel it in nature and a little bit more in Fall.  Well, Fall was officially ushered in just a few days ago.  Often when it officially arrives, it truly doesn't arrive until weeks later.  Not this year.  Fall got the memo and was quite punctual.  Here are a few pics of my travels...well, at least before it dumped rain on me in my topless Jeep that is!
